Sabres “salary cap space is a mirage” per Yerdon in Athletic
freester replied to freester's topic in The Aud Club
Did you read the article? Yeldon uses figures from a website Evolve Hockey whose sole purpose is to project contracts and cap issues. If Dahlin ends up top 10 in assists he gets an additional 2 million bonus which reduces our cap as a penalty. He’s assuming the cap remains constant for the article. Thompson has to be in lineup as he can’t go to Rochester without passing waivers. -

That’s not what the facts say. Of course if they can trade Risto for a 2C on an entry level contract than you are correct, otherwise not possible. -

The situation is even worse if the season resumes and Dahlin hits his bonuses. Signing Reinhart to a bridge deal was another terrible Botteril error. Also the contract that Montour is projected to get is scary for a mediocre defensemen. That trade is also looking very bad given the cap implications. The fact that we are paying a penalty for being over the cap is the ultimate indictment of Botterils incompetence. -

In today’s Athletic Joe Yerdon wrote an article discussing Sabres cap situation. It’s not pretty. Unless we unload a big contract like Risto, or do a compliance buyout (unlikely) or trade an RFA due for a big contract we will have very little flexibility to add to our roster. We may not even be able to afford Johann Larson. -
There are no buyers out there, and they are not penny pinching. Penny pinching owners don't spend over the cap. Be thankful that Buffalo has a franchise. I live in Atlanta, a much bigger and wealthier city. We lost an NHL team twice. While the Pegulas are not perfect and have made many mistakes, I'm confident they will eventually get the right GM in place to make the Sabres winners.

Unfortunately the Bills Stadium Wall message board has really changed since its dramatic growth following the demise of the official BBMB. Growth has not been for the better.

Speculation: Small Market NHL Teams Could Fold, Sabres are one of them

I agree with everything in the video. The NHL is going to have to make major changes to its salary structure, otherwise some teams won’t survive. -

Vogl article in Athletic: Larry Quinn criticizes the Pegulas for executives firings. Quinn is pissed. -

I’m shocked that only 30% of league’s revenues are from tickets sales. I would have guessed 70 %. Where are these figures coming from? -

Agree completely with NHL sports bubble. I think NHL is now in serious financial trouble and its previous business model is non sutainable. I expect revenues to fall 75-80%. Attendance will not return to previous levels at previous ticket prices for at least 3-4 years if ever.. There will be major labor strife in the NHL very soon as players will be unable to accept the new reality. Its going to get ugly with franchises relocating or folding. -
Montreal Trades Marco Scandella to STL for 2nd and Conditional 4th.

It’s not new but just more terrifying evidence that we’re stuck with an utterly incompetent GM for another year. -

Botteril should be paying the Pegulas for the mess he’s created. Both the NHL and the Pegulas will be facing some difficult financial circumstances. -
Well I think at center they already have Toewes and Dach and some other prospects they are high on.

This is very worrisome. I think the Pegulas have over extended themselves and may not have adequate liquidity. In addition poor investment choices may have played a role. If they have the option to do a compliance buyout on KO and refuse, that is a very bad sign. The NHL is headed for some very tough financial times over the next few years. -
Henrique has a significant contract. I’m not sure what type of contract Strome is looking at given the market. Contracts will impact the compensation. Chicago wants young cheap high end talent. Maybe Ryan Johnson or Mathias Samuelson?
-
You are correct, but we will have to give up significant assets to acquire a mediocre second line center such as Henrique or Strome.
-
I think most posters are underestimating the cost of obtaining Strome. On HF boards I asked Chicago fans if they would accept Mitts plus either Risto or Montour and it was unanimous. No takers. Montours, Mitts, and Ristos, value are quite poor.. I know HF boards is not the end all be all but it gives somewhat of a point of reference. Chicago is trying to shed salary, so Risto is less appealing. Montour had a poor season stats wise and some of it may have been due to playing on the left side.
-
What would it cost us to obtain Strome? I am intrigued.
-
Does anyone know anything about the other all stars as far as their future NHL projections?
-
Prayers to you and your family. Are they in Georgia?
-
If that’s the case, than he’s definitely on the team. I don’t think he’s ready to contribute next year after a major injury. He could use another half year in Rochester.
-
No evidence whatsoever that he is better than Sheary. Mitts is slower and more turnover prone. At this point he is no better and possibly worse than Alex Nylander.
-
This is the worst idea I've heard in a while. Maybe we should just sign sign Carter Hutton to an 8 year extension? We need a legitimate #1 goalie and I don't want anyone to mention UPL.
-
Craig Smith can play center, just ask Ville Leino. I'm sure we will get the same great results.

Had Jbot been competent and produced a winner, Buffalo would be perceived as a desirable place for free agents. Hockey polls of this nature are different than Football polls as most hockey players grow up in cold weather climates.
