The NHL is getting in its own way again. It is "re-examining" the emergency back up goaltender "EBUG" rule. This is stupid. First, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Very rarely has an EBUG had to dress for a game. Only twice in the expansion era has an EBUG played, according to something I read in The Athletic while I was on the can the other day. (Here, have some eye bleach.) That's twice in approximately 60,000 games, if memory serves. That means "it ain't broke." Second, EBUGs get eyes on screens. Ryan Vinz dressing for (not playing in) a game made news. Scott Foster playing 14 minutes for Chicago made big news. David Ayres made intercontinental news. He's been on talk shows; the highlights have been everywhere. For once, people were talking about the NHL. The NHL is parched for publicity in the US sports marketplace. Now it wants to fill the lone oasis with sand. Not smart.

Taking both of these as facts, which they are, I still think it's smarter to sit him down. I don't want to see a small issue become a bigger one that lingers into late summer.

May as well give him some rest for a few. Especially on the road.

A good way to stay sober is to play the Jimmy Vesey drinking game. Every time he scores, you take a drink.

I didn't see what swampy said and look, I really don't want to get into who was snarky first or whatever. At the NHL level, I'm not sure "first stop is on the goalie, etc." works. He's the worst I've seen in a long time with rebounds.

Yeah, but does that mean thirds? Or are they going back to royal for the main uniforms?

I don't think "Okay, now it's clear to me you know absolutely nothing about hockey" is necessary whether face-offs are important or not, but yes, I do think winning face-offs is a component of a good penalty kill. "Important" is relative. What a team does with the puck after winning a face-off is considerably more important. What a team does without the puck is also considerably more important. And Hutton's inability to control rebounds is a huge issue both on and off the PK.
