  1. lol yeah, the grass... I put down seed about 3 1/2 weeks ago because there are bare patches and areas with more weeds than grass, and the seeds are slowly sprouting but the rest of the yard is a damn jungle! I heard you should wait as long as possible before mowing so the new grass can establish itself, but I'll have to chance it this weekend. Hopefully I can replace my mower blade without cutting myself.
  2. There's definitely some of that, but in my line of work it is also to my benefit to put in long hours and get more accomplished, because unless we get another grant, the funding for my job ends in December. My boss doesn't hold it over me or anything like that, but I want him to succeed and in doing so I can also help myself (even I'm working quite a bit more than I'm paid to). It would be difficult for him to replace me, but what does it matter if he doesn't have the $ to keep me employed?
  3. Yeah, I had that experience when I was buying, too... if you see something you like in your price range, you have to be ready to move and make decisions quickly. That being said, it sounds like you guys are doing the smart thing by holding off until you find something more affordable. I love having a house I can call my own, but there are many, many (many) times when I wish I'd continued to rent for about 2/3 the monthly rate.
  4. Yeah that's not cool at all. Happiness is up you, and if your sister has been happy on her own, then who is anyone else to judge?
  5. THIS, all day long. You think it's bad now? Wait until you're in your 30s. Most of my friends were already married, and almost none of them are childless at this point. I love my friends but as the years go by I have less and less in common with them, and that makes me sad. Webinars where the audio won't work unless you call in. WTF is the point of a webinar if I have to call in vs. just using my computer speakers/headset? Stupid.
  6. And this is a lame complaint, but I can't believe I have to wait almost 4 months now for another episode of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD! :( The finale was awesome... so hooked.
  7. Agreed, although this season was pretty close because it's the first time since I started following the team that I didn't want to watch them play most nights.
  8. Ouch, weave... that sucks. The joys of homeownership, right? I guess at least it's good you were home when the plumbing finally gave instead of coming home to a disaster. I'm freaking exhausted. I worked 12 hours each Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday, and yesterday I worked 10 hours. I'm doing it to myself, but sometimes being salaried isn't so great.
  9. :clapping:
  10. Congrats, Jo!! That's awesome!
  11. I was starting to worry I was the only perv who thinks the ice mold looks like boobs! Haha awesome.
  12. Lol not just you. First I saw one out was actually at a bar in Buffalo a year or two back, and they definitely look great in the glass. Melted a bit faster than I thought, but could also be my first batch cracked a bit since I over-filled the mold. Way more impressive than standard cubes, though!
  13. I'm not sure which is more awesome: the ability to make perfect spheres of ice that won't dilute my whiskey, or the ice mold itself.
  14. Eleven beat me to it. Maybe it is "trendy" in a sense, but quinoa is a great pasta-like alternative for Celiacs, and a very good source of protein for vegetarians and other people who just don't eat a lot of animal products. I fall in the latter category since I have to watch my saturated fat intake, but no reason you can't enjoy quinoa AND veal. ;)
  15. He's changed his name a few times (I want to say he was most recently going by Oliver Cromwell?), and I don't think he's been around since he and his wife adopted a while back.
  16. The quinoa conversation reminded me of this ad:
  17. No they were just small patties, almost like an appetizer size (too small for burgers). It was definitely vegetarian if not vegan, and I know there were carrots but I couldn't say what else. Nice, savory flavor, though. Looking online there are two possible recipes from Whole Foods and both look similar to what I had: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/recipe/quinoa-garden-cakes-lemony-yogurt http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/recipe/quinoa-and-sweet-potato-cakes
  18. Good to see you back! If you like food, beer, or whiskey, we've got threads for that to keep you entertained in the offseason. ;)
  19. For some reason I've never tried making it with chicken broth, but I'll bet it's good that way. I had some kind of quinoa pattie a while back from the prepared section of Whole Foods that was really tasty, so someday I'll have to try and re-create those. Tonight was salmon patties with a yogurt-dill sauce. Not too shabby!
  20. Yeah I think I heard you have to rinse it or it'll taste bitter, but the brand I originally bought is pre-washed: http://www.earthlychoice.com/quinoa.html
  21. Lol had to google that one (skinflint), but yeah -- quinoa isn't cheap!
  22. I've never heard about having to pre-soak quinoa... I usually cook it kind of like pasta. I take the lazy route and don't rinse it, either (I don't have a mesh strainer fine enough). Like this: http://www.skinnytaste.com/2013/04/mediterranean-quinoa-salad.html
  23. Good on you, PA. Quinoa is quite flexible and there are lots of great recipes out there that use it. I think one of my favorites so far is mediterranean quinoa salad (olives, tomatoes, cucumber, and feta with some lemon juice, olive oil, and red wine vinegar. Yum. I've tired of mint juleps and was looking for another whiskey recipe to use my mint (out of rum, or I'd do a mojito). Found the whiskey smash, and I must say it's quite good! Could definitely see myself drinking these in the summer. And lol yeah quinoa is high in protein, so not surprised you're full after 2 cups of it!
