I finally finished sanding and repainting my back porch yesterday, which has been in various stages of progress for far too long due to insufficient tools and lack of free time. And it looks pretty good, if I do say so myself! And: It's been a brutal couple of weeks with long work hours and far too little rest, but once I leave work today (hopefully in another 2-3 hours), I am officially on vacation through 9/14. Woohoo!

Glad you survived with a clean bill of health, PA! With my family history I'm probably due to start getting screened around 40, and while I will not look forward to it, I will oblige when the time comes around because it's far better than the potential alternative. Now go get yourself some tacos and Rice-a-Roni! ;)

Hey Eleven! I think you forgot to tell us your passport story from the other week.

I wasn't really a big fan (she was always kind of annoying), but she was a pioneer in her field and I appreciated that she could laugh at herself after the plastic surgery debacle. Odd circumstances around her passing.

Speaking of comedians -- Joan Rivers passed today: http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/04/showbiz/joan-rivers-dead/ Very different circumstances, but still sad.

If it means the same thing as when I've had tooth extractions, you will not be conscious during "conscious sedation" (but there will be an anesthesiologist). Only difference between conscious and unconscious is you still breathe on your own, unlike during surgery where you need a respirator. If it's covered, do it!

Pretty sure if he didn't know what it meant he would be using the same term as everyone else rather than make the distinction. But don't let that get in the way of your overt bias and dislike for the POTUS.

I'm on the 5th and do this. It's funny to me how often I arrive at my floor around the same time as others I saw getting on the elevator. Bugs the crap outta me when an able-bodied person gets on the elevator to go 1 floor.

Sorry about the chameleon, and holy smokes either your vet is disturbingly incompetent or downright deceitful. The way he wrote it I didn't get any points (just the ridiculous fine). I mailed the check yesterday to be done with it, but it pisses me off. And new complaint: I somehow overslept my alarms by 2 hours and now found out I have no water because a just main broke somewhere nearby and it'll take them 4-6 hours to fix it. Lovely.

Good luck today (and tomorrow), PA!

Link to full text is towards the upper right when available, or you can go directly here: http://informahealthcare.com/doi/abs/10.1517/13543784.2014.933807 Some journals require subscriptions, but this doesn't appear to be one of them.

Congrats, MattPie! And a pre-emptive congrats to you as well! Hopefully it'll be a Fantastic Friday.

Too. Much. Work. And some a$$hole cop gave me a speeding ticket on Sunday morning. I had only briefly sped up because I was passing someone at the end of a two-lane merge and wasn't even speeding by the time he pulled me over, but that didn't stop him from writing me a citation for $137.50. Last time (and only other time) I got pulled over was in 2005. What a d!ck.

Been away most of the weekend, but congrats, Ink!

lol nice. I'm totally buying apples tonight at the grocery store. :) My main thing has been temperatures... one of the molars on the "good" side is really sensitive (cold/sugar/acid), so certain foods were tough to do at all. And I mostly avoided things like tortilla chips because the edges would jab my gums where the tooth was missing. Now that I can use the opposite side again, everything is fair game!
-
That had to be a lot harder to put up with, having it in such a visible location. I'm glad mine was in a lower 1st molar where it wasn't obvious. And I've had root canals and crowns in the other three 1st molars already, so I'm sure I'll be going through the same process again down the line, but for now it is nice to be done with the dentist for a while.

lol ah, okay... well I guess that means next Thursday you'll definitely have some stories for the Complaint Thread! :P

No worries, Aud... I'm sure for those who know people with the disease it is a very personal cause, and I don't mean to come across as though I think it's a bad thing that they've raised so much money. I wish the message of the challenge's origins hadn't been lost as it expanded because that adds to its appeal, and once it was widespread it seemed like so many people were doing it for fun or just to continue the chain of participation without concerning themselves with the reason why. At the end of the day I guess that doesn't really matter because enormous sums of money were raised, and that's a great thing for the ALSA. I'll admit that for me personally it just raises hackles a bit whenever people are trying to peer-pressure others into donating (especially in a public way). The earlier forms of the message did not do this, but again once widespread a few obnoxious individuals treated it more like a "double dog dare" than an opportunity to invite others to support the cause. I hate it at work when they send around their United Way donation envelopes every year in their faculty and staff campaign, then continue to send emails and reminders encouraging 100% participation in various departments, etc. It's a worthwhile organization, but as soon as I feel like I'm being told rather than asked to donate, I want no part of it. Sorry if this is redundant... just trying to explain why I hold the perspective I do. Again, that's awesome about Pete Frates, and my condolences to you for the family member you've lost.

Being able to chew normally is one of those things you can't truly appreciate until you are unable to do it for some length of time. After 6 months with a loose temporary crown and another 8 1/2 months with varying stages of the dental implant, I finally got my new permanent crown / tooth yesterday. I'm not sure I'd say it was worth $3500, but it is glorious being able to eat like a normal person again after so long. The weather here is F'N Fantastic. And hopefully later today PA will have gotten a clean bill of health.
-
Interesting (and you are correct; I was unaware of this). That's a much nicer story than someone at the ALSA starting it.

Don't you want to watch something to make yourself LESS miserable? :P

Someone has apparently already invented all sorts of ridiculous products for flying: https://www.yahoo.com/travel/ridiculous-travel-accesories-that-will-c1409151932617.html

I think it said in the story he did it because he had his laptop out on the tray table. I have to say I can't blame him for not wanting her to recline her seat... tough enough to fit your laptop on those little trays even with the seat in front of you upright. That being said, once they asked him to take off the defender thing he should have complied.
-
I saw that story... pretty ridiculous that those two idiots ruined that flight for everyone. On a related note: am I the only person who doesn't understand the need to recline your seat on an airplane? I mean, to call it reclining is being generous with the definition since it's really such a small adjustment, but I know I find it annoying when the person ahead of me puts their seat back because all of a sudden it's in my face. Maybe I'm biased being a smaller person who has plenty of leg room (even in regular economy class), but I just don't get it.

I agree. And if their goal was just to raise a sh!t ton of money then they absolutely were successful and will be in great shape down the line if those funds are well-managed. I just hope they realize this year is an anomaly and not their "new normal".
