Yup. There's a chance that with this coach they not only make the playoffs but win a round, the freaking Senators made the ECF last year and they were on the "worst team" lists before the season. Its equally possible that the players are actually not good enough and we need a lot of work. Call me in December.

Grigerenko has signed with a team in the KHL. Zadorov might do the same; they're having trouble getting a new contract together with the Aves. 2 years later, and this trade might end up as ROR for JT Compher. What a haul.

CJ Smith is also a person on this team. I know nothing about him. What if that cost is a first next year?

Yeah I don't love it, I was trying to appease the part of the board that thinks Rindhort has to play center and Kane is a cancer on his wing. In all likelyhood one or both of those guys are playing with Jack. We have good wingers coming up, but we're a little light on the nhl roster right now.

I think any more moves in (of legitimate starters) means at least one of Kane, Moulson, Bogo going out. Unless its a RW I suppose (there are only 2 guys listed as RW on the active roster right now). Vanek in, Moulson out is a coup, though I don't know what it would take to trade him away.

This is true, but there was simply no way that was going to happen. The team had made the conference finals two years in a row, they had a bunch of, what appeared at the time to be, up and coming stars, and they had just lost two of their most loved players to free agency; if they had gone full rebuild after that and let Vanek go I'm pretty sure the arena would have been burnt down. Hindsight is 20/20 for sure, and they could have done a quicker rebuild then, but it was never going to happen.

Waking up this morning and thinking about this trade again, and its not the Darcy-level fleecing I was thinking it was when it was first announced, but man, its just such a solid trade. Good value, take on some salary while you can afford it, flesh out the D, don't give up anything you'll reaaaally miss. I like it so much.

I think, at least long term, that we need another top pair guy; everything I've seen about Scandella is that he's a really solid 2nd pair guy. And I like that, realistically, last year we had only 2 guys who had any right to play in the top 4 in McCabe and Risto. I need one more star, or at least star-adjacent, defenseman, really regardless of whether Risto is a star or not. Maybe Guhle is that guy.

This is a good comparable from what I've seen around the interwebs. Solid, can score a little, can defend well, plays on special teams. I think ideally he's on your second D-pair. Sounds great.
