off topic Star Wars - now with SPOILERS! (Read at your own risk)
sabills replied to Robviously's topic in The Aud Club
After reading that response, and some other fan theories out there, I think I'm beginning to get a better view of Rey's character. I came out of the theater thinking "oh, she's somebody's daughter, probably luke's", but I like the theory that she was one of Luke's apprentices much better. I have to see the movie again to remember some stuff better, but I think it makes a lot more sense. Kylo Ben goes all darkside, kills most of the apprentices, Luke manages to save one and hide her on Jakku, then go into hiding himself. The big issue is that she would probably remember that, so we'd need some sort of contrived memory wipe device to make that possible. Might be possible to make that a Force power, I suppose. One theory also had her as Obi Wan reborn, but I'm not a fan of that one as much. -
I haven't started watching this because I haven't felt like being depressed yet, but I'm sure as February rolls in I'll get there. Has anyone watched this AND listened to Serial from NPR? They seem similar to me, which would be a very good thing.

40 Years Ago Today The Sabres Beat The Soviet Wings
sabills replied to Brawndo's topic in The Aud Club
This is cool. I've always meant to watch this, and its been posted on this board a couple times, but I never got to sit down and watch it so its pretty awesome. Question for you old timers: is the way this game is called about right for the time? Penalty wise I mean. To start the first there was a thirty second period where I thought about 5 penalties could have been called, haha. When I watched "Of Miracles and Men" I know some of the Russian players felt the officiating was a little lop-sided, but the NHL game was a rougher, tougher game than the Russians were used to anyways, so I wasn't sure if this was in line for the times, or if there were some no-calls the refs could have called but didn't. That being said, my dad always talked to me about this game as if we just beat the Russians into submission, that Jerry Korab was just out there crushing skulls. From what I've seen in the first period so far, though, the Sabres are just straight up out-playing the Russians. This must have been a really fun team to watch, back in the day. -

It would certainly make some sort of sense. A very old being strong in the dark side didn't just appear out of nowhere. -

Oh, so they're not Sith? I guess I just assumed. I did hear someone say something about the "Knights of Ren", so is that the new order of Dark Siders? -

First of, to the bold: ugh, get a new take. To the rest, I think thats the point. He's NOT full Darth. He felt very much like pre-Darth Anakin, which I think is what they were going for. He is still held some by the light side. Its notable that he doesn't yet have Darth in his name. Giant weirdo guy even says he has to "complete his training" (who I have a feeling will end up being tiny, probably Yoda sized, mirroring that encounter for Luke). I just watched "Return of the Jedi" last night, and Yoda said that complete HIS training, Luke had to face his father, making Kylo Ren's facing of Han the perfect mirror of that situation. And the mask is supposed to be a rip-off of Vader, Ren is using it to emulate his grand-father, something he is, thus far, failing at. He's not scary, he's not intimidating, he's not the perfect full evil that Vader (mostly) was. He WANTS to be evil, and go full dark-side, but hasn't yet. We'll see if killing his father has that effect, or the opposite. I do agree that we need a real baddy. Niether Ren nor his mentor feel scary enough to me. In general for the new movie, I thought it was good. It FELT like Star Wars, which I-III never really did. I think there was a little too much fan service, and a little to much obvious mirroring of the orig-trig. Over all though, it was good. I liked Finn, I liked Rey (glad they pulled the old bait-and-switch, making us think in the previews that FInn would be the Jedi, only for it to be Rey. Girl Jedi, yes.), hopefully Poe gets some more screen time in the next one. Han dying was fairly predictable, but well necessary and well done. We got to enjoy that character one last time. Captain Phasma was a non-character, maybe she'll get fleshed out more in later movies. And if the last movie has another EVEN BIGGER DEATH STAR I might walk out. Still, I liked it over all. And that last scene with Luke and Rey was just about perfect. -
If your sister is like any woman that I know, you can't go wrong with a nice blanket. Macy's has some great ones, and they're always half off around the holidays. I've gotten one of these: http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/martha-stewart-collection-faux-sherpa-reversible-micromink-throw-only-at-macys?ID=2565636&CategoryID=29405#fn=sp%3D1%26spc%3D71%26ruleId%3D%26slotId%3D1%26kws%3Dthrow the last three Christmases for my mom, my sister, and my mother-in-law, and they've gone over great. For drinking accessories, go to Kegworks on Military and turn left at the entrance. Lots of options. I'll be using this all of the time, thank you.

The Singularities from CBW are a bunch of one off IPAs brewed with a single hop, so its a series of beers, but I agree, its one of my favorites there whichever hop they choose. I think Mosaic was my favorite. Overall, I think CBW has the best beer in the area. I love going to Resurgence (maybe my favorite location in the city, right there with Blue Monk), and I like that you can get a lot of the other breweries beers in the grocery store or Consumers, but for me Community Beer Works are the best brewers in Buffalo. They consistently put out a very high quality product, and with very little fanfare.

The hunt is over! Pernicious is mine! and delicious; its the kind of IPA I like, floral and hoppy without overwhelming bitterness, and very clean and crisp. Thanks for the recommendation, CV.

Fullsteam was good, they had some odd beers for sure, but they had a good line of standards as well. I really liked their Rye IPA, the tequila barrel aged stout was a little much for me, haha. Unfortunately the store I went to for Wicked Weed didn't have any, but I've got a line on where it resides, so I'm going to try to grab it tonight. The BBQ was very good, I believe it was "Eastern Style", so no sauce. First time I've had BBQ like that; I wasn't sure what to make of it at first, but it was surprisingly moist and really good. We've got a couple more suggestions of places to try, so that'll probably happen today.

Had about 7 of Fullsteam Brewery's offerings tonight (5 of those were in a flight) after work in Durham, then stopped over to The Pit and had another beer there (I can't remember what), and then a White Street Kolsch across the street at Parts and Labor. Immersing myself in NC beer this week, and I am yet to be disappointed.
-
I'm currently on beer 4 of 6 and not slowing down. I doubt this sixer sees midnight. I definitely did not plan on drinking all this tonight, lol
-
I grabbed some cans of Lonerider Hoppy Ki Yay which is pretty good. I'm definetly going to have to stop back at the store and grab some Wicked Weed, I've been hearing great stuff about it for a while, I forgot they were an NC export. I'm going to rope the guy I'm down here with into going to Trophy Brewing and Pizza for dinner tomorrow.
-
Anyone have any suggestions for beer in Raleigh? I'm down here for a few days and I want to try some local faire.
-
I know there's a couple people here who live down in NC. I'm going to be down in Raleigh next week for work, what should I do/see while I'm there? Any good spots to watch the Sabres games? If BUF played down there that week I'd probably go to the game.

hah, fair enough.

Man, I gotta say, I don't think I've ever seen someone online give this show a good review. If ya'll hate it so much, why watch it?

Saw that on Saturday, me and Mrs. sat in them and watched them make the ice for a bit. Pretty cool! For more Buffalo stuff: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/917336709/the-american-side-theatrical-release-of-neo-noir-m Noir/conspiracy theory movie about Tesla that was shot AND actually takes place in Buffalo/Niagara Falls. Has a bunch of stars (headlined by Matthew Broderick) in it. Looks very cool Preview video: https://d2pq0u4uni88oo.cloudfront.net/assets/004/883/596/c6a3a99a8febce773e715a8ff9279a84_h264_high.mp4

I think the general idea with glen is that he got under there, killed enough walkers that it built up enough of a barrier that they could no longer see him, and then eventually they saw other more interesting stuff and moved on (possibly due to Enid). They probably could have done a better job of showing that.

No way morgan goes next week, unless its at the hands of that Wolf. To much left to play out there.

They're juggling broadcasters like DDB is juggling lines, and maybe for the same reason. Its a free year, throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.
