It is all a judgement game. From the distance those refs were away from the action they can't or don't really make the call until they run up to the scrum and see what they see. At that point it looks like both players have a near equal grasp of the ball. Was it the right call? Doubtful. Was it what that ref saw at that moment? Probable. Just like the NHL issue - who is at fault? Everyone seems to be saying the league is at fault but I'm putting the blame at least as much on the 'real' refs who already make good money for working part time. Give them some more money but make them have to be full time - you would probably end up with a lot of replacement refs becoming the real refs.
