The two Montreal picks, goaltender Ray Martynuik and left winger Chuck Lefley. The only other first round picks of note, Toronto selected Daryl Sittler and Chicago picked Dan Maloney who us old timers will remember as the vaunted tough guy who had his nose broken by our very own number Eleven.

Boston actually had 3 and 4 and Montreal had 5 and 6. If I remember correctly, and I don’t want to look, both of Montreal’s players never made it. Leach was one, Watson was not the other.

As per Eleven, I will pose the next question. This is kind of a Sabre question. Most people on this board know that Gilbert and Dale Tallon were the top two picks of the 1970 draft. However, the next two players taken were players that both played a significant role in stopping the Sabres cup aspirations. While they were both drafted by Boston, they ended up on the Flyers. Who were they?

Every time I see a discussion on drafting needs in the NHL, I think back to Darcy Regier lamenting taking Tyler Ennis instead of John Carlson strictly because he had already drafted Tyler Meyers a few picks before.

I agree a little with this but think they are the kind of signings that won’t hurt you based on the impending increases in salary cap and the fact that both players will fall in line with where there AAV’s fall in relation to similar players and both have potential to improve dramatically based on age and experience. Oliver, for example will be about the 17th highest paid player at his position by the start of the season and probably mid-20’s by start of next season.

You keep repeating this based on KA’s public statements but they are actually contrary to facts in evidence as well as “well sourced” info. 1) He would have signed Ullmark for three years, probably four if he realized Boston was part of the equation 2) He traded for Murray 3) He asked Gibson to waive his NMC 4) They have been linked to Hellebuyck by Mike Russo among others and Russo is as good as it gets when it comes to connected within NHL circles. The onus is on Adams to complete the deal but speculation that he is confident going into the season with Levi as his main goalie is incorrect.

This all can’t be possible because I keep getting told the cap isn’t rising by that much in two years and Buffalo has to be careful how they spend.
