  1. I think (un?)conciously it's not hard to believe that a player works a little harder or some how gets a little sharper. It's also not hard to believe that their game slips the next year from burnout, relaxing, or extra stress of meeting a new standard.
  2. Kubernetes is Google's FOSS container orchestration engine, and it seems to be rapidly becoming a standard. Docker Swarm and some others are competitors. The gist is: You create a kubernetes config file that says things like, "I want 3 mysql containers, 3 of these custom httpd containers, these data volumes, these network ports, etc" Kubernetes then has a bunch of worker servers that it starts up those containers and allocates the volumes and network, etc. and makes sure they stay up The containers like small VMs where they're built using a script (usually a Dockerfile) the same way every time; in this example the httpd container would for a web app would have something like nodejs or php and part of the build would copy all your website files over The big advantage is once you get everything working, you can create and destroy the containers at will since there's a script that does it for you For software or website upgrades, you build a new version of the container, and then tell Kubernetes to go use that, and it'll take care of it If your site goes viral, you can scale out by just saying "I want 5 or 10 or 50 containers of each now" This is better than I can express it: https://kubernetes.io/docs/tutorials/kubernetes-basics/
  3. Often. Now, I have seen... "inefficiency" between hiring managers, HR, and other groups where they don't get back to a candidate as fast as you'd think, but generally that's not the case. Somewhat related as IIRC you're a developer: this container stuff is the bomb. I can't believe how many stupid system problems I've had to fight with for years this should be able to solve. I'm digging deep into it as I'm now responsible for a bunch of Kubernetes container infrastructure and orchestration.
  4. If anyone is passing through Central PA, stop at Knoebels. It's a small amusement part on the scale of FI, but: No admission; rides are X tickets ($1-3) or all-day pass Free parking They don't care what you bring in for food It's the best rest stop in the world for people travelling with a small child.
  5. I think the point here is OtherRandall did the math and figured to stop from X m/s in Y m, the player's body is temporarily at 50 degrees from perpendicular to balance the forces. At least, that's how I took it.
  6. I could have sworn the ice was at least 45 degrees tilted into a Sabres end a few times this year...
  7. I absolutely didn't mean to imply that. My thought was that your line of work is more hazardous because the airborne chemicals are a lot more difficult to filter out.
  8. I'm reading Randall Munroe's "What If?" right now, and it's so much fun. It feels like something our own Randall would be good it. Hockey content: there's no way that you could shoot a hockey puck fast enough to push the goalie into the net. https://what-if.xkcd.com/39/
  9. As I'm sure you know, hospital masks are generally just a screen that filters out particles. If you're worried about not breathing in birds, something like a hockey mask is sufficient. If you're worried about bacteria, a particular grade hospital mask is fine since the screen is smaller that the bacteria. Viruses are smaller yet, but there's no reason a hospital-style mask can't be effective. Chemical masks are a whole different ball game, since those aren't particles. I think you're getting at people who wear a sawdust mask while painting, and wonder why they get sick.
  10. So post the link from usatoday, and not a wingnut ? site. Perception means a lot, and posting links to Eklund's Science Blog isn't convincing, even if it occasionally reposts something legitimate.
  11. A few thoughts: The company I work for put a self-quarantine directive a week or two ago for anyone who traveled to China recently and they're not to come into work for two weeks The flu isn't particularly relevant here, since we understand the flu well enough to know what steps are required to keep it reasonably under control Even now, no one particularly understands how bad Corona Virus is, so we're seeing China and others overreact after not reacting enough initially Using fringe sites for science isn't reliable; if the person in question actually knew what they're talking about they write an article with attribution for a site with at least some standards (I'd think even Fox News or MSNBC would accept an article for someone recognized for knowing what's up) Fringe science sites are for people who weren't good at science in school but blame accepted science instead of themselves
  12. The Sabres need to pick up 16 points every 10 games for the remaining 23 games, it's fire-sale time. That's 8-2-0, or for all 23 something like 16-5-2. He's bad at math if he does.
  13. I think you answered your own question. ? Upthread pi2000 sounded like he knew (and has "connections"); Bogo did the math and he *should* have plenty of money in the bank, so losing out on ~$1.5M is worth the gamble that he'll end up on a playoff team as depth, something good will happen, and he'll have a contract next year rather than being retired. I give him credit for believing in himself, and I even hope it works out for him.
  14. I hadn't run the numbers in awhile, ugh. Sabres need to pick up 15 of 20 points per ten games for the rest of the season. Somehow, I don't think 7-2-1 for the rest of the season is going to happen.

    Relegation

@MODO Hockey IIRC, MODO (the team, not the poster) was relegated a couple years ago. I don't remember the league names over there, so I'll use NA hockey equivalents of roughly what I remember - The AHL does a whole playoff structure - The best two AHL teams play the worst two NHL teams 7-games - If the NHL team wins the series, they stay in the NHL - If the AHL team wins, they're in the NHL; player contracts on the losing NHL team are largely voided and the players become free agents
  16. Thanks for ruining my dream that we'd actually be able to trade $CURRENT_WHIPPING_PLAYER for an actual bag of pucks. Thoughts above on players and data: I'm not too surprised that the star players aren't asking for the data; they're already doing something that works, so the have no motivation to look at it. It's more likely some bubble guy would be interested as an advantage to stay in the league. But really, that's not necessarily the players' job. It's up to the coaching staff to look at and synthesize the data into Xs and Os to improve individual player performance or the scheme. That being said, I suspect before long you'll have players that do analyze the data and use it, and it may be an epiphany much like Brind'amour and his workout ethic changed the game in the 90s.
  17. Sure, just come up with very valid historical facts.
  18. I think ideally it'd be the Browns or Steelers if you're going for history, since the other old NFL teams are all NFC.
  19. I'm working an overseas telecom project, and the customer won't let us leave anything connected overnight (for them), so I have to wait until the folks get on-site, start up a laptop that I can remotely connect to and then quit when they leave. With the time difference, that's been roughly 4AM EST.
  20. No worries, I'm sure you went right back to thinking about them after you posted.
  21. I could get behind getting rid of place-kicking. Start post-score drives on the 20/25, and there's no reason to punt from the opponents 45 or so. I think without punts the games would look far too one-sided.
  22. So how does this work, for instance if it had been Ehlers, would you still have yelled "EHLERS!" or would be be "NEXT_BEST_MOOSEHEADS_PLAYER" when talking draft? :)
