On average, that means he'd be a borderline top-3 forward in the NHL (30 teams * 3 players). 4 or 5 players above 20 goals isn't impossible, but the Sabres will be having a pretty good year (way better than I expect) if they have 4-5 guys that are scoring on pace to be a top-3 guy on an NHL team.

While I wouldn't sign him or anything, it's not unusual for a player to play well initially when traded. They feel like they have something to prove, or at least they're paying a ton of attention trying to learn their new surroundings. It's no different than any job in a way. He wasn't playing that well before the trade so I don't think the contract-year theory holds as much water as some think.
