OT: A good hockey player should be built like a gorilla
MattPie replied to Marvelo's topic in The Aud Club
Interesting, I missed my calling. I'm 6'2", 33" inseam, but my wingspan is roughly 80" (6'8", fingertip to fingertip). Big shoulders and chest, even when I was a skinny high-school kid at 175 lbs I still wore a 44 long jacket. -
You've violated the (unwritten) rule for both emoticon/text ratio and maximum number of emoticons per post. In addition to your dues, please PM for info on where to send beer to pay your fine. Thanks.

What's the right term, Hallifax Machines? (that's a name for their minor-minor hockey team if I ever heard one).

And yet, whenever the majority of posters disagree with you, you get upset about how you can't speak your mind. Sounds like victim talk to me, suck it up. And to answer the primary question: polling would be my guess. It's not that hard to send surveys out to ER staff, doctors, clergy, etc. to at least get a decent picture of the issue. That's assuming that "reported" means police or some other form of authority. Yes, there can be errors in that kind of work, but statisticians have ways of normalizing that data.

I'd never use the T-word, but I did notice that the Beauts jersey is white in front and black in back (unless that's home/away).

Sounds similar to heat pump issues. We have a combo heat pump and gas furnace here in PA. For this area, the AC is on half of June, all of July and August, and most of September so the heat pump makes sense. In Maryland, I had a heat pump with emergency electric heat backup. Only needed the electric for the couple times a year it fell below freezing.

I saw a sign for it somewhere between Buffalo and Philly the other day. I know there are people around here that are using it with good effect.

695 means Maryland, which is South of the Mason Dixon Line, which means you just need to get used to it. :) I found that on 8-lane highway, the right-most two lanes were often the fastest path in the south. All the morons hang out in the left two, and you can pick your way though the right lanes faster than the rolling road block.

Seveneves. Plot outline: something causes the moon to break into 7 seven large pieces. The book speculates about how it happens, but so far the cause isn't really part of plot, just that it happened and humanity needs to deal with it. In the near future (years) a lot of matter is going to come raining down on the earth. Most of the book is set on the ISS which is being made into a hodge-podge Ark and command center for a fleet of small ships to try to avoid the bombardment. So far it seems to be largely science-is-hard based, similar to "The Martian". No Aliens, space fighters, etc., just people trying to make stuff work and save humanity. I'm digging it.

I have to wonder if the "issues" with the quote come down to translation artifacts. Are there different English translations of the Qur'an, and do those passages agree here? Also, it's worth noting that we're reading history from the perspective of the historian. A Muslim historian is going to likely use slightly different phrases and titles for people than a non-secular person. The "trickster" point is an interesting one, though, even if I don't really believe either interpretation. IMHO Jesus was a man with some radical (and generally good) ideas about how we should treat each other. He died on the cross because he upset the power structures too much (both Roman and religious). That doesn't diminish the message; a good message doesn't need a divine stamp of approval.

Interesting, my parents had no thoughts of send me to Catholic School; when my dad graduated Timon (in 1966, granted) and started ECC he had to take remedial math and science classes to catch up. God's Plan is when some good happens, it's God's Plan. When something bad happens it's not God's fault, or maybe he's just testing me. Or he'll get me through it. (He used for convenience).

No particular comment, other than I love these high-level physics posts from the poster with someone chugging a beer as an avatar. Thanks for the chuckle.

If FB is bitchy for you, get some better friends. :) Agreed. There are those people (just like there are over the top PC people), but for the most part people that believe those things aren't the whack-jobs some of the media portrays them to be. Great post. It does seem a lot like bullying now that you mention it. I forget the details, but NPR was talking about rape a week ago (I think it was Fresh Air), and until 2012 (I think) the FBI's definition of rape was only violent force. There was no allowance for coercion and nothing said about rape within the bounds of marriage. It's an sad question: at what point does "I'm going to ruin your life if you don't sleep with me" or "I'll beat you senseless unless..." become rape? (Please correct me on the details, I was driving home from work so I wasn't able to pay full attention)

I will say this: I recently picked up a new laptop and ended up with a touch screen. It's actually pretty nice be able to tap the gigantic controls on pandora and similar. I just looked at the copy of Excel 2013 I have open, and I don't see any way that I'd be using touch for that. The buttons are too small to hit accurately.

One of the things they try to teach you when learning to ride a motorcycle is to curl up and "be small" when you fall. Genetic reflexes are a bitch though. :( Because you like being vulnerable to dozens (if not hundreds) or evil document hacks? (In all seriousness, I'd never open anything from anyone else if I were using 2000). My complaint, minor as it may be: drove up to Buffalo last night getting in a 1AM. Only got 4 hours of sleep the night before (my own damn fault) so I drank a 20oz Coke, quart of green iced tea (which I made too strong), another 12oz of different green tea (mmm, genmai matcha), and a 5-hour energy to stay awake. My stomach and head still haven't recovered, especially as RosePie woke up at 7AM and because we're all in the same room didn't go back to sleep immediately like normal.

I agree with most of what you've said. The only thing I'll mention is physical security is a fairly important piece of the computer security puzzle. There is no way you can secure a server if you don't control physical access to it first. I get the feeling teaching has lower wages is a supply and demand issue. I've never heard of a school that has had a hard time finding teachers to fill the "roster" (I'm willing to listen if I wrong on that one). When there's plenty of supply, you can't demand more money. And as for private schools, I've heard the environment there can be a lot better for the teacher. I'm not sure if it's true, but it's certainly possible that they can pay less and still find applicants that decide a little less money is better for the environment.

That's odd, I see the tenor of this thread as pretty even. There's a couple people that seem to have made up their mind that he did it, a couple that are hung up on the idea that there's some fault on the woman (prior to the recent posts that the woman may have been the +1 and not the other way around), and most just discussing the particulars in a pretty dispassionate way. Unless you feel like the people that are arguing vehemently (I'm looking in the mirror) that it's not the victims fault as saying that PKane is guilty. I know that I'm not assigning any guilt to PKane as I don't know any facts. The only thing I'm arguing is that there's nothing this woman could have done beforehand that mitigates what allegedly happened. Wait, is it because we stopped using "allegedly" all the time? I thought that it went without saying that without facts, I'm not assigning guilt to anyone. Why's that? If she went back to hook up and then changed her mind, too bad? (I thinking you didn't mean it that way, but it could be easily be read that way)
