  1. Playing Devil's advocate here: who gets to decide who gets to have guns and who doesn't? There's a reasonably large portion of the gun lobby that truly believe that it's their job to own guns to stop the government from turning into a dictatorship. Giving the government the ability to say, "You don't get to have guns because you're, uh, crazy (for speaking out against the government). Those guys (who happen to be very supportive of the government) can keep theirs." could get pretty ugly. I suppose they have a point, but I'm not sure how to balance that with keeping guns out of the hands of legitimately crazy (or even impulsive) people.
  2. I agree with the body-cues and whatnot, which is why I mentioned meeting somewhere else first. I wonder if there's a "rating" system where you can rate/review your hook up's profile accuracy and performance to warn future visitors. In any case, this smacks a little of how afraid you (royal you, not LTS in particular) are of "the public". It's pretty well known that a large percentage of the population isn't bad, so the odds of running into a "bad" person is actually pretty slim on a per-time basis. I have a few friends that have ridden motorcycles (and bicycles) solo through area considered to be pretty dangerous (Africa, Middle East, South America, West Philly, etc.) and have come out unscathed and said they met a lot of wonderful people.
  3. As much as I want to bang the home town drum, the only people that say that are the people that live there.
  4. First and second para whole post: I'm really not seeing how that's all that different than going out to a bar or club with the intent to hook up. It's probably even a little safer, as there's a "paper" trail if something bad happens and a person can't follow you out of the bar. The safer course is probably to shop at tinder, then meet out at bar or coffee shop for a sanity check and then head to a bed or spacious restroom.
  5. I think those are those little potatoes; those make the best salt potatoes, especially if you include some reds and blues.
  6. That's a lot of work for an off-handed comparison. :) Thanks. In any case, it reinforces (at least for me) what has been bouncing around in my head: a player like Stafford won't be a central cog in your Stanley Cup team, but he's sufficient to play on one unless you're loaded on RW. Can Stafford play center?
  7. I'll take your word for it, I don't follow the Hawks that closely. I was thinking, though, does it matter if a player is having a down year or an average (or exceptional) if the numbers and play are the same? (as in, a good year for Stafford == a down year for Sharp).
  8. Smaller than Ink's, larger than pencils.
  9. Interesting, I missed my calling. I'm 6'2", 33" inseam, but my wingspan is roughly 80" (6'8", fingertip to fingertip). Big shoulders and chest, even when I was a skinny high-school kid at 175 lbs I still wore a 44 long jacket.
  10. You've violated the (unwritten) rule for both emoticon/text ratio and maximum number of emoticons per post. In addition to your dues, please PM for info on where to send beer to pay your fine. Thanks.
  11. Good call. Goal song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEiyiXhIo2c
  12. What's the right term, Hallifax Machines? (that's a name for their minor-minor hockey team if I ever heard one).
  13. And yet, whenever the majority of posters disagree with you, you get upset about how you can't speak your mind. Sounds like victim talk to me, suck it up. And to answer the primary question: polling would be my guess. It's not that hard to send surveys out to ER staff, doctors, clergy, etc. to at least get a decent picture of the issue. That's assuming that "reported" means police or some other form of authority. Yes, there can be errors in that kind of work, but statisticians have ways of normalizing that data.
  14. I'd never use the T-word, but I did notice that the Beauts jersey is white in front and black in back (unless that's home/away).
  15. Just keep one of these in your car, no big deal: http://www.roadtrucker.com/12-volt-microwave-wavebox/12-volt-dc-microwave.htm Drunk or texting.
  16. Sounds similar to heat pump issues. We have a combo heat pump and gas furnace here in PA. For this area, the AC is on half of June, all of July and August, and most of September so the heat pump makes sense. In Maryland, I had a heat pump with emergency electric heat backup. Only needed the electric for the couple times a year it fell below freezing.
  17. I saw a sign for it somewhere between Buffalo and Philly the other day. I know there are people around here that are using it with good effect.
  18. See also: Pat Kane vs. Mike Richards.
  19. 695 means Maryland, which is South of the Mason Dixon Line, which means you just need to get used to it. :) I found that on 8-lane highway, the right-most two lanes were often the fastest path in the south. All the morons hang out in the left two, and you can pick your way though the right lanes faster than the rolling road block.
  20. Seveneves. Plot outline: something causes the moon to break into 7 seven large pieces. The book speculates about how it happens, but so far the cause isn't really part of plot, just that it happened and humanity needs to deal with it. In the near future (years) a lot of matter is going to come raining down on the earth. Most of the book is set on the ISS which is being made into a hodge-podge Ark and command center for a fleet of small ships to try to avoid the bombardment. So far it seems to be largely science-is-hard based, similar to "The Martian". No Aliens, space fighters, etc., just people trying to make stuff work and save humanity. I'm digging it.
  21. I have to wonder if the "issues" with the quote come down to translation artifacts. Are there different English translations of the Qur'an, and do those passages agree here? Also, it's worth noting that we're reading history from the perspective of the historian. A Muslim historian is going to likely use slightly different phrases and titles for people than a non-secular person. The "trickster" point is an interesting one, though, even if I don't really believe either interpretation. IMHO Jesus was a man with some radical (and generally good) ideas about how we should treat each other. He died on the cross because he upset the power structures too much (both Roman and religious). That doesn't diminish the message; a good message doesn't need a divine stamp of approval.
  22. Interesting, my parents had no thoughts of send me to Catholic School; when my dad graduated Timon (in 1966, granted) and started ECC he had to take remedial math and science classes to catch up. God's Plan is when some good happens, it's God's Plan. When something bad happens it's not God's fault, or maybe he's just testing me. Or he'll get me through it. (He used for convenience).
  23. So NedFlanders?
