  1. If the goalie catches a puck, and the puck continues into the net, it's still a goal.
  2. Design decisions regarding performance. So how do you explain the Jetta, that gets 39 or 37 with turbo-fours but only 46 with the TDI (all EPA numbers)? Is VW just bad at designing diesel engines? I was going to use a Silverado too, but EPA doesn't cover trucks. One review puts it at 10 and 15 MPG for gas and diesel, so I guess my 45% number was a little cautious. I'd love to see the diesel car that is "approaching 100%" better than it's gas counterpart though (with similar performance numbers).
  3. I think you've been reading a little too much hype, and I'm a fan of diesel. Oil Diesel fuel is only a little better in energy density than gasoline (10%), and diesel engines are possibly 40% more efficient, so at best you're going to get a 45% increase in MPG. Anything more than that owe more to design decisions for the diesel vs. gas engines in a particular vehicle so you're not comparing apples to apples. Biodiesel (according to a quick check) has roughly the same energy density as gasoline, so I'd expect to see better MPG than gas, but not as good as oil diesel. Ethanol is pretty terrible though, no argument there.
  4. I'm hoping he meant Biodiesel, which I'll admit does seem more promising then Ethanol. There are some negatives to biodiesel, mostly that it doesn't flow well when it's cold out. Now, for a different take on things, I give you the greasecar. http://greasecar.com/ D4rk, you know you want to.
  5. Good point!
  6. Fixed
  7. I'm not sure what value of "most" you're using, but none of the 4 vehicles I currently own can run on anything more than E10. That's 2012 and 2011 cars and 2004 and 1982 motorcycles. For the 1982 Honda I rebuilt the carb with ethanol-friendly rubber bits (although I think the original Honda parts were OK too). Some quick numbers, of the 200 million passenger vehicles (that's an estimate), 17.4 million are Flex-fuel capable. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passenger_vehicles_in_the_United_States#Total_number_of_vehicles https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flexible-fuel_vehicles_in_the_United_States One of the primary issues with Ethanol for us is the current best thing to make it from, sugar cane, only grows in small portions of the US (some of Florida and Hawaii, I think).
  8. After a quick reading, it sounds like some of the references were added during the Continental Congress. I'm not too surprised that politicians would add those references.
  9. Agreed. And anyone that's watched enough Crime Procedural TV knows that evidence degrades. It's not like the victim has the option in this case to mull it over for a few days.
  10. I think it's possible that the man-made portion of global warming isn't significant and it is a natural process. The problem I have with the concept is it's always used as an excuse as to why we shouldn't do anything to curb man-made "pollution" (I use that term loosely). If climate change is not man-made, reducing energy usage will have no effect. If climate change IS man-made, we really should be reducing energy usage. There's no downside to implementing the changes, other than whiners that are mad they can't drive their giant gas-guzzling truck around. I'm not sure if you are referring to this, or not: I think I've see pictures of people doing the "Nazi" salute to the American flag, now that makes a ton more sense.
  11. I'm not sure if it happens this time of year, but my wife was there in May a few years ago and every afternoon it would pour down rain for an hour or two. She dealt by finding a bar or cafe and having a drink to wait out the rain.
  12. I'm not sure about the money, but God was added to the pledge in the 50s as you mention. Fun fact: the pledge was written by Francis Bellamy, who was born in Mt. Morris, NY, which is adjacent to Letchworth SP. Fun fact I just learned: Bellamy was a Christian Socialist minister, many of whom believe that capitalism is idolatrous and rooted in greed. I find it ironic that a minister didn't put "under God" in but Congress did.
  13. Just to make sure, that's not the Quebec way way of saying, "The Rock", right? Boy would that be a let-down.
  14. Bold: Technically, it's for the playoffs too but all the games are on national cable TV so they're all blacked out until 48 hours later. I'd guess that if you set your proxy to somewhere else (Romania, for instance) it'd be fine. Maybe some of our International-flavour posters can verify that.
  15. Your form of coping may not be the same as someone else's. It's as simple as that. You know, I was going to pose something like this hypothetical, but here's living proof. Assuming the person that hit you was at fault, what would make you feel better: the guy goes to jail for a month or you settle out of court for 2 months of your salary so you could do whatever you wanted for 2 months?
  16. The best revenge is a life well-lived. Money helps. I had a friend that was assaulted while running in Philly. Apparently this guy's MO was some honka-honka to female runners while passing by. they actually caught him and she testified and the whole deal. Dudes are weird.
  17. I thought about going here. There's a lot of ways people cope and how they're affected. Travelling the world for a year might be better therapy than "well, they guy is in jail". I think it's up to the individual to make that call, and judging on it is in the same league as judging other people relationships. You can't tell me what should make me happy. That being said, I'd think she could also file a civil suit either way, right? I think, realistically, there are a lot of crimes that require someone to press charges. The DA *could* go ahead without the victim, but as mentioned upthread it's rare and really difficult to win that case.
  18. Aud: Right. As with most of this story we don't really know the facts. Maybe she was a gold-digger holding out for more money (and when the case started lining up, Kane's team offered a ton). Or the other way is the case was already borderline and she figured (or was advised) this could go either way and might as well get paid for the suffering even if there's a chance at justice. It's a tough call: being set for money for years vs. a 50/50 shot at putting someone away.
  19. Is that the new flavor from Yancy's Fancy?
  20. Interesting, while the picture quality is generally good for me, it's not as good as "real" HD when it comes to motion. On a PS3 or PC, and the motion isn't as smooth as HDTV (OTA or cable). It's very good, but not perfect It'll be interesting to see what happens this year; they may make big changes with the switch to hosting via MLBAM. Negatives to GameCenter: anything that you could get on cable in your area (including premium sports packages) will be blacked out for 48 hours. So the games on NBC, NBCSN, NHL network, and the local team's network (Comcast Sports Flyers, for me) cannot be streamed live. I think that adds up to 10-15 games per year for the Sabres. Also, if the game ends before you start streaming (or if the stream gets interrupted), you can't start watching again for several hours. But as long as you have the stream up, it's fine for hours (you can "rewind" back to the beginning, etc.). As far as I know, this is when the NHL servers go through and edit out the commercials for the replay version. You'd think they'd keep the unedited version up until the replay is ready, but whatever. That may change if MLBAM is doing it this year. All in all I'm pretty happy with it, although the blackouts are really annoying. And, more than a few times I missed the chance to watch a game the night it was played because I didn't get it started before the end of the live game. It's been well after midnight and the replay wasn't available yet. EDIT: Searching the for Forum for "gamecenter" will turn up a bunch of info over the years, BTW>
  21. I always think of this song when Halifax comes up. It also runs through my head whenever I pass by Halifax, PA.
  22. Upthread, the story is two women (friends) when home with Kane and his friend. Friend #1 and Kane's Friend went off into another part of the house, and left Kane and Friend #2 alone, when the alleged rape happened. At least that seems to be from the more legitimate reports.
  23. From the context above, it sounds like the franchise owns the rights to develop the site of the Civic Arena (the Igloo). If you look on the map, that's a significant hunk of downtown real estate, which in PIttsburgh actually has real value. :)
  24. I don't understand why you wouldn't just melt some coffee ice cream. :)
  25. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, the family friendly outdoor movie at a local park yesterday. For those that haven't seen it, it's the heart-warming tale of seven brothers whom, after starting a fight during a barn-raising and being run out of town, return and forcibly abduct six women with the intent to marry them back at their family mountain compound. After causing an avalanche to thwart the perusing townsfolk, of course. I remember watching the movie repeatedly when I was a kid, but it didn't strike me how strange it was at the time.
