"Increasingly Substantiated BS" rumor thread- 2014 Edition
Samson's Flow replied to WildCard's topic in The Aud Club
You are probably right about the goalie trade market at the deadline this year. But making trades for the sake of trading doesn't really accomplish anything for our future/rebuild... -
Haha yeah it's obvious that Derrico was talking about the Russian Grigs as opposed to the Latvian Grigs. Maybe we just call them Mikhail and Zemgus a la the Sedin brothers in Vancouver. :P

Understood, but to me Enroth as a potential goalie purgatory starter/timeshare next year has more value than a 26 year old player who has never scored more than 40 points in a season plus a third rounder. Edit: but I certainly appreciate you actually naming a player and team to trade with instead of just "let's trade Miller"... -

Isn't Clutterbuck more of the same for us? I think we should be targeting players with the potential for top 6 scoring. We can't build the entire team out of 3rd liners and hope that McDavid can turn the whole team around right? -
You do in the crazy world of Apple.

The retention of salary on all three (Vanek, Pommers and potentially Miller) would all end after this season based on comments upthread. given that Pegula has stated that cash shouldn't be an issue, it would make sense to me to maximize the salary retention on a potential Miller trade (either the 15% to cap or the 50% of total contract amount, IIRC) in order to maximize the return. Our cap number this year isn't an issue and all of the salary retention will end this offseason with all three contracts coming off the books. -
If Pettine goes our defense instantly regresses back to memories of Wannstadt...

Small complaint today - I left both my wallet and watch at home this morning in my rush not be late. It's very disorienting not having means to pay for things/ID/etc. The way this morning went i'm surprised I remembered to put on pants...

Any idea if the retained salary from these trades (Vanek and Pommers) would count towards the salary floor? If they are going to be fielding a relatively young roster next year for the McDavid tank, it may be beneficial to retain salary from these trades to maintain roster and cap flexibility going into our "competitive" years in 15'/16'. -
Without Stafford and Leino who is going to score for the Sabres? We have to keep up the 1.5 goals per game pace.. :bag:

I would choose Hall as well. You know how the saying goes - you have to give up something good to get something good. Our team need at forward and our depth at defense means that even trading an 'equal' prospect would benefit our team as a whole. Top D prospect traded away for Top Forward prospect makes us a better team.

Isn't that exactly the type of player that TM should be targeting? The ones that are on the precipice of NHL top-6 level but have yet to show it. That's what we brought TM and his player evaluation skills in to do. -

Plus he fits the young NHL player mold that I would be looking for to accelerate the rebuilding process a bit. Even with McDavid/Reinhart we aren't going to be playoff competitors if all of our players are less than 25yrs old. -

Toffoli was making some noise as a young forward toward the end of last year but I haven't heard anything buzzworthy from him this season. It's possible I don't follow LA/west coast hockey as closely but is he having a good year? -
Despite the haul that your proposed trade is, I still doubt they trade one of Hall/RNH/Eberle. Although if they did, which of the three would you prefer? I disagree. Miller is much more than a slight upgrade from Scrivens. In terms of goaltending talent it isn't close IMO, however, the difference in trade returns will not reflect this discrepancy.

but Liger, unless the 1st round pick is top 5 it will take 2-3 years at least for the player to make the NHL, let alone make an impact. That and if you are trading them Miller, the Oilers will (assumedly) be a much better team by 2015, taking us from early first round to mid to late. There comes a point in a rebuild where you stop collecting picks and start seeking young prospects/NHL players so that you peak in the same window. not even mentioning that EDM is supposedly on Miller's no-trade-to-canada list

Grigorenko refuses (but then) goes back to Juniors

Huzzah! Can't wait to see him continue his strong play from the World Juniors in Quebec. Best part is he gets 20+ minutes instead of less than 10 in Buffalo's fourth line. -

I don't think trading Enroth is worth it given the returns noted above for Dubnyk/Scrivens. We wouldn't be expecting anything more than a 2nd rounder. Why not keep him as a 'Goalie Purgatory' stop-gap until we are finally good. Trading Enroth assumes keeping Miller which throws a wrench into the tank in 2015 strategy. To me it's trade Miller or keep all goalies... -
So if we are offering goaltending and defense, it would take quite a bit to land one of their top 3 forwards (probably even untouchable). So who else would we target? Yakupov and his league worst +/-? Some other lesser prospect?

Correct. That was the site he first started when I still knew him in my college days. Neato -

Let's hope that we have better success than the Redskins and Cowboys in the recent past. Not sure if the open checkbook owner has always been a good thing -

If you haven't seen that Sens board from the original GM thread it was a beautiful perception change. From 'he won't leave' to 'sabres may take him' to 'oh sh*t what are we gonna do' to 'our owner sucks...' Awesomeness. -

I am aware of the reputation of hockeybuzz. I was just intrigued that the name sounded familiar. It's possible that he got that job once Garth went from Sabres blogger to a NHL general role... EDIT: Looks like it is the same guy I was thinking of. Small world. Sucks he's working for such a unreliable website... -

I think the current incarnation of the team is showing that having a bunch of first round players under 21 doesn't give that much immediate return on investment. It takes these kids at least 2-3 years before they should even realistically be considered for an NHL roster unless they are Crosby/McDavid level. I would prefer we trade one of the first rounders this year for a top 6 forward. Otherwise we are stuck in the never ending cycle of waiting for prospects. -
