‘How does this group of players – whether they’re veterans or not – respond to Ruff’s inevitable button-pushing? Ruff has learned during his time in Dallas and especially in New Jersey that today’s athletes require a softer approach but he’s still going to drive this team with more demands than they’ve had in the NHL, whether they’ve played for Phil Housley, Ralph Krueger or Granato. And Ruff won’t wait until November to start barking if he sees the need. I would almost expect one choreographed outburst in September just to make sure messages are sent. And many of these players asked for some heat during their exit interviews in April. Once Ruff brings it, we’ll see who responds to the prodding and who turtles from it.’
