‘Thompson’s high-powered night held historical value, as he became just the second skater in Sabres history to record five goals in a single game. Dave Andreychuk is the only other Buffalo player to do it, scoring five during an 8-6 win over the Boston Bruins on Feb. 6, 1986. Thompson spearheaded the Sabres’ fierce attack right out of the gate, firing a flurry of shots at the Blue Jackets’ defense, recording seven shots for the period, which tied the Sabres’ franchise record for most shots in a single period. Maxim Afinogenov (Dec. 16, 2000) and Jason Pominville (Nov. 10, 2007) are the only other Sabres skaters to fire off seven shots in a single frame.’
